LTC James R. Auvil, O.D., M.B.A., F.A.A.O., C.P.C.

LTC Dr. James Auvil, who was promoted in 2011 to Lieutenant Colonel, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in June 1991. He performed research on laser-protective goggles and thin films while he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics. He served over six years as an Armor officer and completed assignments at Fort Knox, KY, Schweinfurt, Germany, and Fort Hood, TX. From 1996-97, as the Experimental Force Coordination Cell Executive Officer, he worked in a high-profile effort to digitally connect a fighting brigade for the first time in history as part of an Army-wide modernization plan.
Dr. Auvil graduated from Indiana University School of Optometry in 2001 and returned to active duty as a Medical Service Corps officer. He served as Chief of Optometry, Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers, Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. He earned one of the Army Optometry’s two Long Term Health Education and Training scholarships and in 2006, completed a concurrent residency and MBA program at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. Dr. Auvil was the top graduate, MBA Honor Society President, and MBA Student Association President.
Dr. Auvil is a medical fraud consultant to the Department of Defense Criminal Investigative Service, Army Criminal Investigation Command, TRICARE Program Integrity Office, and the US Attorney’s Office. In 2011 Dr. Auvil founded the Federal Optometric Society (FOS), a non-profit organization to serve current and former federal service optometrists and which began accepting memberships in January, 2012. He also serves as a consultant to the Accreditation Commission for Health Care. In 2010, Dr. Auvil was the only MSC officer selected as a White House Fellowship Candidate. Dr. Auvil is an active member of the AAO, AAPC, AFOS, NAVAO, and the American Optometric Society.
Dr. Auvil previously represented the Department of the Army Surgeon General for AAFES professional and healthcare services and performing quality oversight for the $50M international healthcare services program and currently serves as the Chief of Optometry for the US Army's largest medical department activity at Fort Benning's Martin Army Community Hospital.
